Ten of the Best Dog Training Tips
There are many different approaches to training a dog, and all of them differ in their methods and acts. However, you will find that there are several factors that are universal with all dog training methods. The following is a list of ten dog training tips you could employ, no matter what training plan you use, and it will help you to make training your dog a lot simpler and more enjoyable.
1. Dominance is Key You have probably heard the term, “Alpha-Dog”. Dogs are pack animals that co-exist together within a “pack”, or group. The leader of the pack, in each group, is called the alpha-dog. Any other dogs in the pack will show submission to the alpha-dog and follow his example. Your role is to institute yourself as the “alpha-dog” over your dog. If you do not do this, your dog will think that he is the alpha and will attempt to do whatever they want, whenever they want. When your dog knows that you are the leader, your training sessions will start to go much more smoothly.
2. Patience is the key. Patience is the one aspect to dog training that you will require the most. A new behavior or trick will not be learned by your dog in a day, regardless of what method you use. Even though your dog might appear to be unpromising, you must be persistent and always patient.
3. Training should never end. Perseverance is what comes hand in hand with patience. There are some dogs able to pick up on conduct and tricks in a matter of days. Weeks may pass for other dogs. One day your dog may look like he has acquired a new behavior, and then, to your surprise, they will misbehave once again. The training has to continue beyond just short sessions, to make sure that it is fully learned.
4. Playtime is important. Having a pet isn’t just about training. Both you and your dog need playtime! Take time out of your day to play with your dog, and you will find training to be a lot simpler.
5. A dog must exercise. Even though you are training, your dog still needs exercise. Keeping your dog on a regular exercise routine can help keep them in shape and use all that extra energy up.
6. Do not hang onto unrealistic hopes. You shouldn’t expect things out of your dog that are impossible. Dogs have more difficulty with some tricks. Your dog will be much happier and training him will be easier if you don’t have ridiculously high expectations of what you want your dog to learn.
7. Don’t resort to bribery. Using treats to train your dog may seem like a good idea, but it may not be. All this does is teach your dog to complete a task for a prize, as opposed to doing it because you wanted them to. You can still give them a treat and a healthy dose of praise if they do something right, but if you offer them treats too often, they will come to expect it.
8. Remain Consistent Stick with your schedule and routine of training once you have established one. Dogs are creatures of habit, they will appreciate a routine. You will make your dog very happy and your training will be a success if you stick to a schedule.
9. Never be harsh with punishments. Discipline is important if your dog should misbehave. However, discipline is to be stern, not cruel. Using a firm voice will work a lot better than just yelling at your dog.
10. Exercise family training. Your whole family should be on board when you begin to train. Be certain that all of your family members utilize the very same training methods, and the process will go a lot better.
