How To Stop Dog Biting
It is a serious matter if your dog bites someone, so preventing that from happening before it gets to that point is priority one. You should be aware of the differences between your pet mouthing your fingers while playing and one that actually follows through with the bite. Mouthing isn’t normally considered as an aggressive behavior. You may still want to put a stop to this habit because it will prove to be very annoying later on.
Poor training, a lack of training and little socialization in the early years could lead to a dog that bites. In order to hopefully get the biting to stop, training should begin at once.
Chew Toy
Dogs and puppies need to chew. If you’ll give them a chew toy they won’t have the need to chew on your fingers (or couch,or socks or shoes….). If your pet attempts to chew your hands say –no- firmly and give a chew toy in its place.
Refuse Playtime
If your pup nips or bites at your hands, make a yelping sound that is loud and quit playing with him or her. If you do this right away, your pet will begin to understand that biting is wrong and play time is over.
Why This Behavior
Is your normally laid back pooch appearing to show a sudden sign of aggression? If this is true then there has to be a reason for this sudden behavior change. The problem could be a medical one or he could have undergone some nightmarish event. If your pup has been aggressive always, then he may not have been properly socialized early on or he could have experienced some abuse early on.
Once a physical problem has been taken out of the equation then you can resume the re-training of the dog.
If you are working with an older pet that has biting issues, this behavior will be more difficult to break and could take quite a bit of time. There are some great training programs out there that you can get if you want to try it from your own home. If the home training method does not work, do not hesitate and go find a trainer in your area that works with these types of dogs.
Do what you have to do to prevent your dog from biting someone because if he does the consequences of this action be severe for both the dog and the person. If the aggression signs that your dog is showing are getting severe, avoid the group training and get the one on one training.
There will be cases that the answer to your problems could be as simple as finding another way to interact with your dog. Try to find the right training method for you and your dog and use them properly otherwise the results could be tragic.
The results you get from a good home training program or by working with a good trainer should help curb your dogs desire for bad behavior. If your pet should show any propensity for biting and you are going to be around people, he should be muzzled.
There is no question that it is probably tough admitting to yourself that your beloved pet could actually hurt some body you must not ignore the problem or you could be inviting big time trouble.
