How To Get a Puppy To Stop Biting

Get your puppy to stop biting simply and easily.  Puppy Biting is potentially one of the most destructive traits any puppy can have, and many people want to know how to stop puppies biting; those razor sharp teeth can really do a lot of damage very quickly.  If you have a puppy that bites, you need to get it under control as soon as you can, or it may become a real nightmare later.

Pups like to play a lot, and biting is a natural and important part of their playing; they will use their teeth, because their play is also a learning period for life as a mature dog.  A dog in the wild needs to be able to skillfully use their mouth for defense, & hunting, so it stands to reason that they will be honing these skills, so they’ll be able to survive later on in life.

You might ask; how can I stop puppy biting?  Here’s the answer.  If you want to control it, we will study what happens in nature, to get a better understanding of how life in the litter works.  Take the mother dog as an example, when she’s nursing her puppies and one of them gets too aggressive and bites her, she will not put up with, she will let them know immediately that the biting is not acceptable.  She alerts the pup by yelping loudly when she gets bit.  Her yelp is Very loud, high pitched and scares the puppy and makes the startled pup stop biting immediately.  Now keep in mind the puppy isn’t trained that quickly and the mother will probably have to repeat this process a few times before the puppy associates the yelp with the biting, but the mother is rewarded for her consistency.

Something else we can observe in the litter is the relationship with litter mates.  If two or more puppies are playing, when one of them gets too rough, the one that got bit will let out a yelp just like the mother when she is feeding.  The results are the same, the noise, shocks the offending puppy and all playing ceases for a little while.  Every time this is repeated, it teaches the biting puppy that he’s hurting the other puppy and each time he stops biting.

When considering puppy training biting, nature is a good teacher, especially when considering how animals learn.  We can use the above example and use it to our advantage to stop puppy biting.  Below are 4 steps to quickly and easily get it under control and stop the chaos.

1.    Get your puppy just like you normally would.  As soon as the puppy bites, let out a yelp, the puppy should stop biting you right away.  If it doesn’t stop right away, try the yelp again, but louder and higher piched this time.
2.    Move your hands away from your biting puppy quickly.
3.    Ignore the puppy for a few short seconds.  He needs to know that he’s being ignored, but not excessively.
4.    Love all over your little pup and let him know he’s a “very good puppy”!

As we considered above, you will probably need repeat this process more than once, but hang in ther and very soon your puppy will not bite you.  If you have an aggressive puppy,  that likes to bite, it might take a little more work than for a mellow puppy, but hang in there, you will win in the end!  Happy training!
