I observed a unfortunate event one morning when I was exercising our dog Rigby off leash. He was enjoying running with another bunch of dogs, a couple of labs and a border. Rigby is a water dog, and I mean absolutely one-eyed, as were the rest of the group, the only difficulty was, their master didn’t want them get wet…. You can visualise what happened, the group were in the drink and loving it!
Anyway, their owner was calling them out unsuccessfully and when they finally came to him, to my shock… they got belted, after that the group stayed well away from their owner, and who would blame them. Rigby came and sat behind my legs quaking. At the time he was still just a pup, so what was the difference?
We had discovered Clicker Training and had been using it for a couple of months and though only a mere learner, Rigby’s understanding of our instructions was very clear and he knew that if he acted right, he would get a treat or some scrumbles. We still see the reluctant group on the odd occasion but their owner still twigged!
